Allright people...here comes the war... // March 23, 2007
I just saw that on MASH. Funny, I have never actually watched a full MASH all the way through but I constantly here references to it. Tonight, as I flipped through channels while avoiding a paper I need to write for Church Administration and Management, I heard that line as the choppers flew into the MASH Unit and the war came to those that existed to patch up the survivors.
It happened to me this week.
I'm at Camp Shelby, MS. I was alerted a couple weeks ago that I would have to go to Camp Shelby to train up a UMT that is headed to Iraq. I was told that the Chaplain was a LTC and nothing about an assistant. Turns out, he's a Major, superintendent of schools in CA and a great chaplain!
Here's another thing about Operation Warrior Trainer... I was recruited with the mission that I would be teaching classes, mentoring chaplains and providing Religious Support to the Brigade. Only, this is a brand new mission and that’s not what it panned out to be. Turns out, I am a "combat counterpart" in the UMT world. Its actually more of a mentoring thing. I meet with my counterpart here about an hour everyday and we just talk. That’s it. We talk about spiritual readiness, Iraq, the mission, Religious Support Annexes, Memorial Ceremonies... we talk about everything and its probably the best training out there.
Rockin’ the training...
And I'm back in the war. Just like that. I am surrounded by soldiers (many already veterans) who are headed for combat. All the nerves, troubles, angst, and passions are raised in one sprawling camp.
...and tomorrow I get to go to Vicksburg. Sweet!!
