Chaplain's Kit 3.0 // May 30, 2007
This is going to be of no interest to anyone but new chaplains and anyone who is a equipment hound I guess. Over my deployment and since returning, I have been upgrading my chaplain's kit (your kit is issued to you upon graduation from CHOBC).
The kit is great - there were just some things that needed an upgrade to Kit 3.0....
1. The Kit Bag
The original kit bag was olive drab and had "ALICE" clips; which don't work on the new MOLLE gear... and olive drab is SO Korea... Step one: upgrade the kit bag to a new ACU "small tool bag." This is a great bag because it has a hard, reinforced base, internal pouches, and side pockets. I had to alter the sides with some 550 cord so that I could attach a shoulder strap. There are better bags out there, I chose this one cause it had the solid base and was under 20 bucks...
The glass is 16oz
2. The Stole
As I noted in an earlier post, the stole I was issued was utterly useless. I used it one time and soldiers made fun of my "cammo neck thing blowing all over the place." It is made of nylon and only reached to your waist. The idea is to be "tactical" but if you are wearing BDU's you can't even see it - what's the point? Oh, and did I mention it was BDU? Yeah... that's SO Cold War...
So, I had our local sew shop make me a new one out of black cotton duck (that's the material Carharts are made out of) This thing is HEAVY! Its also machine washable, doubles as a tow strap and (if you will note the cross piece in the middle) has a Velcro bar that goes across the middle so that it will not blow away. I even have small fishing weights to drop in the bottom pockets to keep it in place. It would have to be quite the service to have the need for that kind of addition, but you never know where you'll need to have church...
3. The Extras...
I added to the kit:
A stand alone battery operated light I acquired from another kit, two candlesticks my Assistant found in an Iraqi marketplace (nothing says church like some candles - whether you light them or not...) A pad and pen (records etc), leatherman (a good pocketknife would work too but I have been in spots where the leatherman was just the ticket) and a lighter. Next to the lighter is a small case that is for holding the Ashes for Ash Wed. I also use a small vile for anointing oil. The other items you see are the cross, the chalice (it has a small dish that fits inside the cup so you don't have to use as much juice), a dish for the bread (in the back I have a larger one that contains more as a backup), the alter cloths (the big tan one (also cotton duck) you see under the small green ones I had made for me - again, so that the cross would stand out and people would know that church was happening!), the WWII edition of the military song and prayer book - I just like it, and my Bible. That Bible was given to me when I was ordained by my church. I had asked for a Bible that would fit in my cargo pocket and it does a fantastic job. That little Bible has been soaked in Iraqi channel water during an air assault attack, soaked with the tears of soldiers and my own...), and of course, the all important picture of my wife...
The one thing not shown is a small vile that contains juice. Mostly, I just use either a tiny can of grape juice or a box of it. When I want to use wine, I use the vile.
And there you have it. That's what I take to the field with me every time I go. Perhaps in the future I will get a kit that actually attaches to my MOLLE gear, but I find that this fits into my ruck quite nicely and does the trick.
Cool. Thanks!
Brilliant! Thanks for sharing your ideas and past experiences with the rest of us. May God continue to bless you and your ministry to our soldiers.
Hello again sir!
Like I said before I am trying to order supplies for the UMT before my chaplain arrives so he won't have to worry about much of anything when he gets here. I know from being in Iraq once before that a lot goes to waste so I am trying to only order things that I know will be used. I also just finished a religious preference servey in my battalion so that I know what kind of general religious supplies I need to order.
This is the website I went to to look up UMT supplies: https://warfighter.dla.mil/special/mig49/items1.jsp
Don't worry I didn't go overboard! But instead of ordering a Chaplain's Kit I just ordered the stuff that goes inside of it and I'm going to find an ACU bag and stoll insead of the BDU colors that they come with now.
Please let me know if you have any advice!
I'm Catholic and I've noticed that from my servey 30% of my battalion is also Catholic so I'd like to become qualified to be a Catholic Representitive before we go back to Iraq. I ordered some Catholic devotionals and Bibles as well as some roseries.
Also, I know that most Chaplains don't want to take a bunch of heavy hymnals to Iraq to carry around for field services and the old field hymnals that the chaplain corps used to put out are way out of date now... I was wondering if you could tell me where to find some good praise and worship music. What is the best way to do music? On a screen? On handouts? I am ordering a keyboard and a guitar but in case we're not able to use that is there a good set of worship music out there that can be used to sing along with? I've seen chaplains try to use praise and worship CDs but I don't thaink they are any good to sing along with as far as congregational use goes... Sorry, for making this so long but I'm really excited about being able to prepare the UMT with anything we could possibly need within reason.
Thanks Sir!

Can you please give me the measurements of your stole and corpral. also do you know where civilians can obtain some of the items like the croses that are in your kit?
Thanks,
