Remington Recovers // January 15, 2008

My father-in-law, Dan Nave, pastors Heritage Bible Church in Remington, IN.

Last Wednesday, this tiny town on I-65, was flooded. Many families lost everything. The story is quite moving. Check out these two videos:

This one is about the actual flood and the socond one stars Dan has he explains his church's response to needy people. (The link will take you to the news channel - look for the video titled "Remington Raises Funds to help Flood Victims."

A quote from Dan and Cheryl's blog, "As of tonight, over 200 people are homeless in Remington. That's more than 10% of the population. Over half of the 55 trailers in the park were damaged beyond repair, and I estimate at least 30 houses in town have major damage. I have personally visited at least 30 with major damage, offering our friendship and prayers. One gentleman lost his life as his vehicle was swept away by the flash flood. His body was found in town about a mile away, later in the day.

The efforts of the people in Remington have been overwhelming. On Tuesday, our church purchased $1,000 in underclothing, socks, and sweats for the victims, most of whom were still wearing the same clothing they were wearing when they fled for their lives. Around 70 people are eating 3 meals a day at the shelter, and there are still about 30 people sleeping there. On Thursday, we (Heritage Bible Church) opened an account at the local bank, called the Remington Disaster Relief Fund. We advertised it in newspapers and media outlets across the area. In the first 48 hours, we raised $17,000, not counting the thousands already spent by individuals and businesses. We're asking people to complete an application form for assistance, and so far have almost 50. One of the questions asks about the family's needs. Sunday, at Heritage, we read the names and needs of each individual family and prayed for them. I can say it was the most awesome times of worship I've ever experienced."

I love it when Christians act like it and actually have a social conscience!
